Governor of Lagos state, Babatunde Fashola, has confirmed that more than 1.7 million passengers used the state’s waterways monthly.
Fashola made the disclosure while inaugurating the Ebute-Ojo Ferry Terminal and Ijegun-Egba Floating Jetty in Lagos.
The governor stated that the high traffic was an indication of people’s confidence in the state’s water transportation system.
According to him, the increasing patronage of waterways in the state is as a result of government’s investment in the sector.
Fashola said the terminals at Badore, Mile 2 and Ibeshe were at various stages of completion, promising that the projects would be delivered before the end of the year.
“We are putting finishing touches to these terminals and before the end of the year they will be completed and come on stream.”
He said that the state government had acquired more ferries and attracted more private sector ferry operators as part of efforts aimed at improving water transportation.
Also speaking, the Managing Director, Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Mr Yinka Marinho, said the new Ebute-Ojo Ferry Terminal and Ijegun-Egba Floating Jetty were the first commercial jetties to be established in Nigeria.
He said the infrastructure would boost socio-economic activities in Ojo, a suburb of Lagos, and other areas along the Badagry Expressway.
“The projects will also ensure seamless movement of passengers and goods from major markets like Alaba International Markets and Trade Fair Complex to Lagos Island, Lekki and Apapa,” he said.
Marinho also said that the jetty and terminal were equipped with fuel storage facilities which would be managed by reputable oil firms.
He restated the commitment of LASWA toward ensuring an efficient water transportation system in the state.
