President Muhammadu Buhari has written the National Assembly to notify the lawmakers of his return to the country and his readiness to resume work.
The letter, sent Monday morning, was in line with constitutional provision and followed on Buhari’s return to the country on Saturday following a 105 days stay in the United Kingdom for medical treatment.
According to a statement issued Femi Adesina, the president’s spokesperson, the letter, dated August 21, 2017 was sent to the leadership of the Senate and that of the House of Representatives.
The letter stated, in part, “In compliance with section 145 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended.) I write to intimate that I have resumed my functions as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with effect from Monday, 21st August 2017, after my medical follow-up in London.”
Buhari left for London on May 7, 2017 and handed over the reins of government to the vice president, Yemi Osinbajo, who functioned as acting president while the president was away.
