Officials of the Department of State Service on Friday stormed a Federal High Court in Abuja, where they disrupted the court proceedings and rearrested Omoyele Sowore and Olawale Bakare, popularly known as Mandate.
The two men were released on bail on Thursday evening following the intervention of the court and were in the court Friday as part of their trial.
They were standing trial at the Federal High Court, Abuja in a case brought against them by the Nigerian Government, when a team of armed DSS operatives invaded the court, leading to commotion.
Lawyer to the activists, Femi Falana (SAN), met with Justice Ojukwu and the lawyer to the DSS, Hassan Liman, in a bid to resolve the matter. The judge then adjourned the case to 11, 12 and 13 of February 2020 for further hearing.
However, the DSS, which claimed it had filed another suit against Sowore and Bakare, insisted on re-arresting the duo. They faced resistance by members of the public in the court, but Sowore visibly sustained bruises as he was pulled either way by DSS operatives inside the court and his supporters.
Falana told journalists his defense team had not been furnished with the new charges the DSS had brought against Sowore and Bakare.
However, after several minutes of the chaos, Falana drove the two men in his car out of the court premises with DSS operatives in several vehicles giving them a hot chase behind.
The team subsequently caught up with him and rearrested the two men.
