The Akran of Badagry, Aholu Menu-Toyi 1, on Tuesday said the postponement of the general elections was in the best interest of the country.
The Akran, who made the remark during interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Badagry, urged residents of the area to remain peaceful and shun violence.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, at a news conference in Abuja on Saturday, announced that elections would now hold on March 28 and April 11.
“It is normal that some people would be frustrated with the shifting of polls because many people were looking forward to exercising their civic rights.
“Apart from those who were willing to vote, it has also disrupted plans for other Nigerians, but people should try and see the positive side of this.
“With the shifting of the polls, those who are yet to collect their voter cards would be able to do so and the security agencies would be able to re-strategise on the best way to provide security to all Nigerians.
“People in Badagry and Nigeria as a whole should embrace peace and not resort to violence in demonstration of their anger. It would lead to nothing good. So, embracing peace is the best solution”, he said.
Menu-Toyi said security agencies informed the commission that there would be inadequate security if the polls were to take place on Feb. 14 and 28 as earlier scheduled.
He urged Nigerians to continue to pray for the country. “At the moment, the country is going through a lot of challenges. So, Nigerians should pray for the betterment of our great nation.
“Everyone should also cooperate with the various security agencies and be law abiding”, he said.
