Sunday Igboho meets Afenifere’s Ayo Adebanjo in Lagos, shrugs off attempted arrest

Hours after a publicized encounter with security operatives on the Lagos Ibadan expressway, Yoruba activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo (Sunday Igboho) held a scheduled meeting with Afenifere chieftain, Chief Ayo Adebanjo and other Yoruba leaders in Lagos.

Adeyemo was on the way to visit Adebanjo when he ran into a team of heavily armed security forces who attempted to arrest hin.

The Yoruba activist, who has been in the news for campaigning against the excesses of armed Fulani herdsmen in some parts of the South-West, said he was never invited before the security men attempted to arrest him.

When asked if he would honour a police invitation, Igboho said, “Go and ask them to invite Gumi and Shekau first before disturbing me. Let them face the bandits instead.”

Igboho also said he would not run, adding that he had returned to his base in Ibadan.

When asked if he would go into hiding, he said, “What for? I am in the neighbourhood. I cannot run.”

Igboho told the Punch his bank account was initially frozen but the restriction was lifted recently.

He said he had done nothing wrong but fight for the rights of his people.

Meanwhile, the Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, also condemned the attempt by security operatives to arrest Yoruba rights activist, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho.

Reacting to the incident, Afenifere spokesperson Yinka Odumakin said: “There is no sense in that (the attempted arrest). He (Igboho) is a free citizen of Nigeria. If they need him for any questioning, they should invite him not to go and waylay him on way like an armed robber.”

No information was released reversing the meeting between Adeyemi and Adebanjo.

Recently, Adebanjo hosted a gathering which had ex president Olusegun Obasanjo and Aare Gani Adams in attendance.
