Why I removed Ihejirika as chief of Army Staff – Jonathan

Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, on Tuesday, suggested that he sacked a former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Azubuike Ihejirika, because he (Ihejirika) was not doing the right thing.

Jonathan said he was not under any pressure to sack Ihejirika from office, adding that he cannot sack a person who is doing the right thing no matter the pressure.

The former President said this during a book launch in his honour in Abuja on Tuesday, adding that some people thought he sacked the former COAS due to some pressure from the North.

“He mentioned my removing the Chief of Army Staff, General Ihejirika and said that because there was so much pressure on me from the north. I was not pressured,” Jonathan said.

“If somebody is doing what is right, even if you want to hit my head, and split my head, I will not (sack the person).”

Speaking at the event, Kano governor,  Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, described Jonathan as an Angel.

Ganduje said for conceding defeat in the 2015 general election without any pressure, Jonathan earned Nigeria and Africa a good name.

He also commended the former President for revolutionizing the almajiri school system in the Northern part of Nigeria.

“I agree with those who call you an angel for conceding defeat. I salute you for that. You have made a name not just for yourself, but for Nigeria, Africa, all developing countries, and for democracy. So, I salute you.

We salute you for what you did in that regard. We are multiplying the new model of almajiri schools in Kano. That is an important legacy you left for us,” Ganduje said.
